SOUND.Chris Staefe: Photography, Web Design, and Sound Art Portfolio
I am a seasoned conductor, baritone, and composer. I began singing in high school and went through college on various scholarships and fellowships. I've been to several artist in residency programs and have been tuaght by some of the most well known and influential musicians of our time. After studying music for over 15 years, I walked away from it more than halfway through my doctorate.
I have no regrets of that.
What I learned was the ability to write music. People write music for all sorts of reasons but the only reason that I could ever give for why I write music is "because it was fun". I stopped writing music for couple years and am now beginning to write again. My new works are not posted yet and I imagine I will never hear them in a large auditorium with a university priced sound system even when they are. But instead I hope you listen to them and discover something in them that allows your imagination to drift and wander into a place you've never been.
I would strongly suggest using headphones - theres lots of stereophonic stuff happnening. Also, please don't steal my work and claim it as your own. If you want to burn a cd or download some stuff to let your friends listen to it, just be sure to tell them where you go it.
THanks,
cs
_JANUS
Janus was a collaboration between William Sellari, Crystal Watson, and myself. There is an acompanying video portion which is not shown here. JANUS was the god of gates, doors, beginnings, endings and doorways, the god of change and transitions such as progression of past to future, of one condition to another, of one vision to another, and of one universe to another.

Advertising through the ages has always has a wonderous affect on society. It has taught us the best ways to keep ourselves safe, keep ourselves healthy, what the best weiner is to buy, and what the best antidote to heartburn is. However, advertising should have a surgoen general's warning on them too.
_FREEFALL
How would you ever know if you are flying or falling at any given moment in the middle of the sky? The horizon barely moves. You are free… dancing on the air. Time stretches to amazing lengths. Do you worry about what will happen in a few minutes which seem days away? Or, do you enjoy the ride? Freefall is a piece that I was compelled to write after my first skydiving experience. Enjoy the ride!
_EARTH QUAKING IN BIRD TIME
This piece was written for Ray Schwartz. There were two sounds used for this piece: one was the sound of my New Hampshire family resonating wine glasses on New Years Eve, the other was the sound of a guy telling stories by a fountain in Arizona.
_DUST
We breathe. With each breath, millions of pieces of dust are caught in a chain reaction of movement. We blink. When a narrow beam of light shines into a dark room, we can see the tiny particles moving almost weightless through the air. Imagine the life of a piece of dust: one of billions in such a small area – a meteor field existence, floating as long as air is slightly moving, accelerating to amazing speeds as a celestial mass moves near, getting caught in a still area and falling to the floor over a period of days, resting immobile until stirred.
_ACCORDIONS OF LIGHT
Comprised of two other pieces written a year apart: For THe CORE for solo violin and Deaf for solo Piano. As an experiment to be choreographed, these two pieces were randomly laid on top of each other and processed individually.
_SUmmer of 07
Our current state of affairs in this country is really depressing. We focus on a level of frivolity that has no long term bearing on our lives but encompasses a large portion of our energy and attention all while the real stuff is moving unnoticed in the background. This piece was written for Jillian Ardoin in the Summer of 2007.
